The London Borough of Merton, situated in South West London, covers commercial centres such as Mitcham, Morden and Wimbledon. The population of the borough is over 200,000. The council has a revenue budget of £151m in 2017/18 and employs over 5000 staff. 18% of the borough is open space with over 65 parks including Wimbledon and Mitcham Commons. Merton plays host to one of the world’s most famous sporting events – the Wimbledon fortnight held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

Your new role 

This post offers the opportunity to lead the finance support function for the council’s subsidiary companies. You will have a dual reporting line to Directors of the businesses and to the Head of Accountancy within the council. Key responsibilities will include budget setting, monthly reporting on company performance, revenue analysis, profitability and performance indicators and year end reporting. Whilst there are strong reporting systems in place it is critical that the successful candidate continues to make appropriate developments so that valuable information is produced to support decision making. You will have the confidence and gravitas to work with senior personnel and present at board meetings.

What you'll need to succeed

You will be a fully qualified accountant with the ability to work very independently. You must be confident, assertive and have the ability to drive things forward proactively. The successful candidate is likely to have had experience of working in the private sector, will have excellent excel skills and have developed management reporting to support the control and development of growing businesses.
