The London Borough of Merton, situated in South West London, covers commercial centres such as Mitcham, Morden and Wimbledon. The population of the borough is over 200,000. The council has a revenue budget of £151m in 2017/18 and employs over 5000 staff. 18% of the borough is open space with over 65 parks including Wimbledon and Mitcham Commons. Merton plays host to one of the world’s most famous sporting events – the Wimbledon fortnight held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

Your new role 

A high profile post reporting to the Assistant Director of Resources, it is a critical role in the department. You will be responsible for maintaining and developing financial systems to ensure that the organisation derives maximum value from the systems whilst ensuring adherence to accounting policies and controls. This is a technical role (you will have the ability to write code) and you must also have the ability to engage with the users to make sure that they are able to use the system as effectively as possible, keeping them abreast of new and enhanced systems. You will continually review systems and lead on ensuring that the system is fit for purpose to both comply with regulatory requirements and to achieve best practice.

What you'll need to succeed

You will be a fully qualified accountant and will have either worked in a finance systems focussed role or be able to demonstrate having a very strong aptitude to do so. Knowledge of local government accounting would be a distinct advantage, though not necessary. Deep understanding of accounting practices and how management information can be developed through systems and technology is essential. You will have the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders will look to add value across the organisation.
