This represents an outstanding opportunity for a highly experienced & commercial Finance Director, or for a talented and ambitious commercial Senior Finance Professional, looking to develop into their first Directorship role.

Housing sector experience is less important than the ability to demonstrate exceptional commercial acumen, a progressive and achievement based CV, a collaborative and proactive leadership style and an innovative and enabling approach to fund raising and treasury management.

Essential is that the candidate understands how to optimise effective finance leadership within the confines of a small medium enterprise (SME), working within a small team, who shares the organisation’s key values, and is aligned to the ethos of “generating profit for purpose”.

The Organisation

Severn Vale Housing Society (SVHS) is a progressive and forward-thinking housing association, based in Tewkesbury whose vision is “to be recognised as the leading housing provider in Gloucestershire”.

Borne out of a stock transfer from Tewkesbury Borough Council in 1998, SVHS’s current core business is the provision of general needs and supported housing with the mission of offering housing and property services to enhance communities.

SVHS currently owns and manages over 3,800 homes, located mainly in the Tewkesbury Borough area with a small number of homes in Gloucester, Forest of Dean and Stroud. 

SVHS reported turnover of £21.5m at its March 2017 year end (Surplus before tax £4m) and employed 118 full time equivalent staff.

During the last couple of years, SVHS has successfully undergone a period of transformational change leading to improvements and enhancements across numerous key areas, including but not limited to corporate governance, risk management, capability development, operational efficiencies and stakeholder engagement.

SVHS is highly ambitious and is keen to grow and develop both its core business, building and managing new homes, but also diversifying into new areas.

The Opportunity

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a highly capable, commercial and proactive Finance Director (FD) to assume a key role within the organisation, reporting directly into the Chief Executive & the Non-Executive Board and to lead an effective Finance team.

This is an exciting time to join SVHS, as the business embarks on the next stage of its plan with growth and development at the forefront of its agenda. The new Finance Director will play a key role in accessing new finance and capital to help fund this next stage in the business’s evolution.

This is a hands-on but challenging and rewarding role with a broad remit and engagement across the organisation. The role takes responsibility for:

  • Fund raising & treasury management
  • Financial & investment analysis
  • Financial Control
  • External Audit
  • Financial Management and management reporting
  • Finance Business Partnering
  • Finance Strategy & Planning
  • Development and implementation of finance related policies
  • Optimisation of IT systems for financial recording and reporting
  • Data analytics and security of financial data

The FD will be responsible for setting the strategic financial direction of the organisation, driving transformation change across finance and the rest of the business, as well as driving continuous improvements in finance practice at an operational level and in promoting finance to the core of business decision making.

Its aim will be to strengthen SVHS’s financial discipline, and to promote a culture so it becomes more commercial, adaptable and innovative

The candidate

The ideal candidate will be a professionally Qualified Accountant who can evidence a strong track record of performance, success and progression throughout their career to date.

Due to the SME nature of SVHS, it is essential that the candidate can adopt a hybrid style, being capable of strategic thinking, commercial acumen, operational management and equally demonstrating the ability to be hands-on and detail orientated.

The candidate will possess a strong collaborative leadership style and be able to demonstrate career progression in the context of a commercial, dynamic, innovative and continuous improvement, business change environment.

A skilled negotiator and an expert relationship manager, the candidate will be able to communicate clearly and effectively, complex financial information and analysis to a broad range of different stakeholders.

The candidate will possess a strong commercial outlook and set themselves apart by their levels of commitment, enthusiasm, drive, energy and professionalism and already impressive career track record to date.
